02 · The Portrait

Lea, at close range.

The curtain falls at the Stadsschouwburg, and Lea is already composing her review on the steps outside. The set was beautiful, the second act a little long, the lead unforgettable. Five minutes later she has changed the plan entirely, a small wine bar she spotted on the walk in, and the night takes a sweeter, lighter turn. That is the pattern with her, a beautifully planned evening that improves the moment she decides to alter it.

She is 23, petite at 161 cm, with long wavy auburn hair and hazel eyes. Her look is soft, romantic and sun-kissed, pared back for the city like a spring collection shown in the rain: a cream silk blouse, a skirt that moves when she does, a thin line of gold at the wrist. Charming without effort, spontaneous without ever being careless. Her colours are warm and her proportions careful, a small woman who has learned that one good seam matters more than many details.

Theatre is her first love. Interior design is the second, and she notices everything about a room, the proportion of a window, the fabric of a chair, the one lamp that almost works. Ceramics is where the two passions meet. She spends weekends at the wheel and holds firm, surprisingly technical opinions about glaze. Milena in the Jordaan shares her fondness for clay. A gift from her studio, she jokes, must be earned over at least three dinners. Imperfection, in her view, is simply proof of a human hand.

Lea lives in Oud-Zuid, a short tram ride from the Leidseplein theatres and a pleasant walk from the Vondelpark hotels. She speaks English with a sweet, animated warmth and has a gift for making first meetings feel like reunions. Luna is another regular in the stalls, should you prefer a bolder theatre companion. For curtain calls and whatever follows, Lea is the gentle, delightful choice.

03 · After Dark

An evening, as Lea sees it.

Summer changes Lea's idea of theatre entirely. When the open-air stage in the Vondelpark is running, she wants to be there early with a blanket, a bottle of rosé and a paper bag of cherries, a short walk from her home in Oud-Zuid. Whatever the programme, a concert, a comedy, a small dance company, she watches with her chin on her knees and whispers her verdict before the applause has finished.

Afterwards the plan changes, as her plans do. A restaurant she noticed on the way, candlelit and oddly furnished, where she spends the first five minutes rearranging the room in her head and telling you which chair she would keep. In winter the blanket gives way to velvet seats at the Stadsschouwburg, but the whispered verdict and the sudden change of course survive every season.

04 · In Conversation

Lea, in her own words.

Question IWhat makes a room beautiful?
LeaOne thing slightly out of place. Perfect rooms feel like waiting rooms. I like a lamp that has clearly been loved and a chair nobody chose from a catalogue.
Question IIThe last play that surprised you?
LeaA tiny production with two actors and one chair. I cried a little, then argued about the ending all the way home.
Question IIIWhy ceramics?
LeaBecause clay tells you immediately when you are rushing. It is the most honest teacher I have ever had, and the least forgiving.
