The four shades
Nora wears honey blonde with hazel eyes and the athletic carriage of a woman who crosses the old centre on foot, briskly. Fashion design occupies her thoughts, so she tends to notice the construction of your jacket before its colour. Her edit is resort glamour held firmly in check: ivory tailoring and a single gold accent.
Cindy, based in De Pijp, has long wavy blonde hair, blue eyes, a slim frame and a sporty lightness. She sails when the wind allows and carries a camera most days, and her wardrobe keeps its sunny poolside mood to a crisp shirt and almost no jewellery.
Nancy, 30, lives a few streets from the Vondelpark. Her blonde is the golden kind, her eyes are blue and her energy is considerable. She dresses in camel and white with gold at the ears, a palette of late sunshine brought indoors. Sushi and long drives along the coast feature heavily in her conversation.
Thea, also in Oud-Zuid, pairs caramel blonde hair with green eyes and a warmth that is entirely unforced. Her glamour is natural and sunlit, a soft knit over fitted trousers, and she will happily cycle across the Vondelpark to reach a new Japanese kitchen.
How the edit is styled
Warm hair reads beautifully in monochrome. Against a black dress or a navy coat the colour becomes the accessory, which is why none of these women relies on much else. Expect restraint in the details: one cuff, small hoops, a bare wrist. The effect in a hotel lobby is polished rather than bright, and it lingers, in memory at least, in soft focus.
Occasions it suits
This is a sociable edit. Nora is at her best with a toast at the start of the night, which makes her a natural choice for a celebration. Nancy and Thea prefer long, unhurried tables, and both suit a relaxed lunch that quietly becomes an evening. Cindy is lovely company for a walk before dinner, camera in hand, while the canals turn silver.
For a private evening, the hotel visit is the simplest format, and any of the four can extend it into a dinner with a table booked a short walk from your hotel.
A note on light
Blonde changes with the hour more than any other shade. Under the pale light of an Amsterdam afternoon it looks almost silver; by candlelight in a panelled restaurant it turns to amber.
